Lansdowne EAC is hosting DCVA's The science and business of plastics in our environment presented by Carol Armstrong.

Plastics are commonplace in and around our waters of Pennsylvania, and understanding their affects on our environments and our bodies seems critical. This science is still in its infancy and questions are basic such as how much plastics are being dumped daily, where can they be found, and which biological systems can they enter. We don't know how much we are consuming when we eat food, which ones are in us and how to measure them systematically, and how much they are disrupting our immune and endocrine systems. Many regions are conducting studies and projects to clean up watershed and coastal debris, funded by such groups as NOAA. Studies-to-date of the penetration of microplastics will be presented, also discussions of business efforts and possible solutions, followed by suggestions of what we can do as individuals, and then discussion. For those interested in the science of measuring plastics in the environment, a key scientist, Sherri Mason, is presenting at the Stroud Water Research Center on 9/22/19.

Presented By: Carol Armstrong is a Ph.D. cognitive neuroscientist and neuropsychologist who was drawn by the need to preserve our marine environments where biodiversity and ecological productivity are at great risk due to the expansion of human activities. After 30 years of research, teaching, and caring for people with brain cancer and other neurological illnesses at the Medical School of the University of Pennsylvania and the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, she has shifted her focus to watershed restoration. She first joined the Advisory Council of the Pennsylvania Office of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, with Harry Campbell's amazing and tireless leadership, and then completed the PennState Ext. Master Watershed Stewardship Program for Chester and Delaware Counties in 2017. Now, her major time commitment is to the Stroud Water Research Center's stream monitoring program. A long time member of the Sierra Club, Carol leads Service Outings to clean debris from critical waters, such as at the Octoraro Reservoir and the John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge at Tinnicum. Carol spearheaded the Environmental Advisory Committee for Charlestown Township where they are working on riparian buffer projects and ordinances. She often espouses joining "your" watershed association (hers is the Green Valleys Watershed Assoc.), and is very pleased to be a partner with the Darby Creek Valley Association.
